State Testing Motivation Ideas for 3rd Grade

State testing can be a stressful time for students, especially those who don’t have a growth mindset. A growth mindset is the idea that intelligence can be developed and strengthened through effort and practice. It’s important to instill this belief in your students before they take their state tests so that they approach them with a positive attitude and confidence. In this post, I’m going to share three state testing motivation ideas you can use with your 3rd grade students.

Encouraging Positive Self-Talk

Help your student break free from the gloomy cycle of negative self-talk! Encourage them with motivating and uplifting statements to nurture a healthy attitude before and during state testing.

Fill their minds with positive words for an empowering effect that will boost confidence – reminding them to trust in themselves, build resilience and aim higher! Post these motivating phrases around the room!

  • I am capable of doing my best no matter what happens.
  • I am prepared for this test.
  • I have studied and I am ready to do my best.
  • I am confident in my abilities.
  • I am smart and capable!

Reflecting on Self and Goals

Before taking on a big test, get students to focus inward and think about what makes them special. By reflecting on their individual strengths and unique gifts, they can approach the test with confidence knowing that they are ready for it!

Encourage your students to reflect on their testing goals! Whether they write them in a journal or use a growth mindset testing journal – having personal aims can help boost confidence and performance!

Practicing Mindful Breathing Exercises

Mindful breathing exercises are an excellent way to reduce stress levels before or during the test. You could have your students practice these exercises every morning before school or right before they start their tests. Encourage them to focus on the feeling of air entering and leaving their bodies and to concentrate on each breath for 10 seconds or more at a time. This will help them clear their minds of any anxiety or worries they may have about the test and will allow them to focus on the task at hand with greater clarity.

It’s important for 2nd grade teachers to instill a growth mindset in their students when it comes to taking state tests so that they approach them with confidence and positivity instead of fear or dread. I hope these state testing motivation ideas prior are helpful for your students and that they feel ready for any challenge that comes their way during state testing season!
