Second and third grade teachers this Penguin reading has 3 types of text! One product with Informational Text, a Fictional Story, and a Non-Fiction Poem. I’ve provided two ways to interact with the informational text: Magazine Style with two columns per page and Full page which can be used for close reading and annotating.
To help students understand the different penguin species there are special Fun Facts About Penguins cards about Emperor, Adelie, Galapagos, Gentoo, African, Chinstrap penguins and more!. The students will enjoy learning facts about each species!
Each literature type has 4-7 printables that are Common Core aligned and cover many of the ELA standards within the 3 major clusters: Key Ideas and Details, Craft and Structure, and Integration of Knowledge and Ideas.
The following topics are covered:

The following skills are practiced with the printables:

The story and poem are both originals that I’ve written. I enjoyed writing these two fun and interesting pieces that I know 2nd and 3rd grade students will enjoy! Fun, relevant and educational…what more could you ask for!
You can use these in small student-led cooperative groups, whole class, small instructional groups, at a literacy center and so much more!
